Leelanau Township Offices
The Leelanau Township Offices are now open to the public at this time,
although face masks and social distancing is required.
Individuals are strongly encouraged to conduct business by telephone and/or email.

Leelanau Township has received an Application for a Special Use Permit for an RV Resort on the former Timber Shores Property.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and State of Michigan restrictions and orders on conducting meetings, the first available Planning Commission meeting for discussion was on August 27, 2020.
At their August 27, 2020 meeting, the Planning Commission requested that a ten-thousand dollar ($10,000.00) escrow account be established for fees to be incurred by the township in reviewing this Application.
A check was received from the Applicant by Leelanau Township on September 28, 2020 to establish the Escrow Fund for review.
The Planning Commission will discuss the Application and review process at a future meeting. The Application is not on the agenda of the October 22, 2020 scheduled Planning Commission Meeting.

The Leelanau Township Annual Meeting of Electors scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2020 was Cancelled.

The Leelanau Township Board, at their Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, approved the Short Term Rental Ordinance listed below with a change to the maximum allowed occupancy. The maximum occupancy of a Short Term Rental will be based upon the number of bedrooms in the rental, with a maximum occupancy of 15 occupants.

A Short Term Rental Permit will be required to operate a Short Term Rental in Leelanau Township beginning in 2021.

Now that the Ordinance has been approved, the next step is for the township board to approve the procedures and fees for processing permits. This will be done in October.

It is anticipated that Applications for Short Term Rental will be available and accepted sometime in November 2020.


Please take notice that the Leelanau Township Board of Trustees at a regular meeting on February 19, 2019 at 7:00 PM in the Leelanau Township Hall, Northport, Michigan, adopted Ordinance No. 1 of 2019, the Leelanau Township Prohibition of Recreational Marihuana Establishments Ordinance.

The following is a synopsis of Leelanau Township Ordinance No. 1 of 2019:

An ordinance to provide a title for the ordinance; to define words; to prohibit marihuana establishments within the boundaries of Leelanau Township pursuant to Initiated Law 1 of 2018, MCL 333.27951,  et seq., as may be amended; to provide penalties for violation of this ordinance; to provide for severability; to repeal all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict therewith; and to provide an effective date.

This Ordinance shall become effective thirty (30) days after publication in a newspaper of general circulation within the township.
