Apply For... Concealed Pistol License (CPL)

APPLYING FOR A CPL:

  • Application: Concealed Pistol License applications may be obtained from the Leelanau County Clerk's Office, the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office or downloaded from the Michigan State Police website.

The applicant must be:

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • A citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted into the United States.
  • A resident of the State of Michigan for at least six (6) months prior to application submission.
  • Training: See details below to determine if you need training based on the type of application you are submitting.  Training Certificates must be issued within five (5) years of application.

Original  Training certificate must have everything listed below or it will be rejected:

  • Name of applicant.
  • Date of class (must be within five (5) years).
  • Instructor's name, telephone number, certification number (if any), signature, expiration date of the certification of this instructor.
  • Name and telephone number of the state agency or a state/national firearms training organization that has certified the individual as an instructor.
  • The statement, "This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372."

NEW APPLICANTS:

  • $100 Application Fee payable to the Leelanau County Clerk.
  • $15 Fingerprint Fee  payable to entity taking prints. (Note: Fingerprints MUST be taken by LiveScan system.  The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office is the only entity in Leelanau County with this capability.)
  • Must present an original training certificate, which complies with Section 5j of 1927, PA 372, to the Clerk's Office at the time of submitting the application.  Training Certificate must be issued within five (5) years of application.
  • Do not sign the application until directed by staff at the County Clerk's Office.

RENEWAL APPLICANTS (previous license is not expired, or expired within 1 year period before date of application):

  • $115 Application Fee payable to the Leelanau County Clerk.
  • No fingerprints required.
  • Applicant must certify to a statement on application that he/she has completed at least three (3) hours of review of the pistol safety training course.
  • Applicant must certify that he/she has at least one hour of firing range time in the six (6) months immediately preceding the renewal application.
  • Do not sign the application until directed by staff at the County Clerk's Office.

RENEWAL APPLICANTS (previous license expired more than 1 year):

  • $100 Application Fee payable to the Leelanau County Clerk.
  • $15 Fingerprint Fee  payable to entity taking prints (Note: Fingerprints MUST be taken by LiveScan system.  The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office is the only entity in Leelanau County with this capability.)
  • Must present an original training certificate, which complies with Section 5j of 1927, PA 372, to the Clerk's Office at the time of submitting the application.  Training Certificate must be issued within five (5) years of application.
  • Do not sign the application until directed by staff at the County Clerk's Office.

Fingerprinting: All new applicants must be fingerprinted after application is submitted. The Leelanau County Clerk's Office collects the $15 for fingerprinting on behalf of the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office. Fingerprinting can be arranged by calling the Sheriff's Office at (231) 256-8692.

Approval Process: Once applicant is fingerprinted, the fingerprints and application is submitted to the Michigan State Police for approval or denial.  If the application is approved, the County Clerk's Office will issue the license.  The license is required by law to be mailed to the applicant's mailing address. If the application is denied, the County Clerk's Office will mail a letter indicating the statutory reason for denial.

CPLs expire on the applicant's date of birth, and is valid not less than four (4) years but no more than five (5) years from date of issuance.
