As of Monday, November 9, 2020, Bingham Township has received 27 Applications for 2021 Short Term Rental Permits. We are currently scanning these Applications for completeness. Applicants will receive an email once their application is determined to be complete.

Applications will then be reviewed for issuance of the STR Permit. This will take an additional 7-14 days. Applicants will receive their permits by email and first-class mail.

After over a year of consideration including a Public Hearing, on October 19, 2020 the Bingham Township Board adopted Ordinance No. 2020-1019-01, The Bingham Township Short Term Rental Ordinance.

Here is the adopted Ordinance: Bingham Township Ordinance No. 2020-1019-01

Bingham Township will begin enforcing the Ordinance starting on January 1, 2021. Starting on that date, anyone operating or advertising a Short Term Rental must obtain a permit from Bingham Township.

Bingham Township will begin accepting applications for Short Term Rental Permits at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Bingham Township Office, 7171 S. Center Highway, Traverse City, MI  49684.

2021 Short-Term Rental Application Form

Short-Term Rental Policy

The Bingham Township Short-Term Rental Ordinance, as-adopted, bases the allowable occupancy of a short-term rental on the number of bedrooms approved on a Health Department permit or approval.

This requirement is intended to prevent over-occupancy of short-term rentals and over-use of the short-term rental septic systems.

Bingham Township realizes that not every dwelling has a Health Department permit or approval on file, particularly older dwellings. It is our understanding that the Health Department will be reviewing these septic systems on a case-by-case basis with a Sewage/Well Evaluation or Review for Remodel. It is also noted that these evaluations will take time, and will not be completed before Short-Term Rental Applications are received by Bingham Township on November 5, 2020.

Therefore, for 2021 Applications, Bingham Township will accept proof that a Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department Sewage/Well Evaluation or Review for Remodel has been applied for. The 2021 Short-Term Rental Permit will be contingent on receipt and approval of the Sewage/Well Evaluation or Review.

If you have any questions on the Short-Term Rental Application or Permits, you may contact the Bingham Township Zoning Administrator at (231) 271-2722 ext. 3, mornings.

  • The Bingham Township Planning Commission and Township Board amended these sign standards in 2019 to comply with United States Supreme Court decisions.
  • Campaign signs are considered “Temporary Signs” by the zoning ordinance.
  • The standards for temporary signs in Bingham Township depend on the zoning district in which a property is in.   See Bingham Township Zoning Map

  • In the Agricultural and Residential Zoning Districts the following apply:
  1. A Maximum of Two (2) total Temporary Signs (campaign signs) are allowed per parcel.
  2. A Temporary (campaign) sign shall not be larger than three (3) square feet of sign area. (for example 24” x 18” = 3 square feet)

  • Temporary signs must be removed no later than ten (10) days after the event.
  • Temporary Signs within any county or state right-of-way or easement must meet the requirements of the applicable road agency (ie, Michigan Department of Transportation or Leelanau County Road Commission)
  • One should have the permission of a property owner to place a temporary sign on or in front of their property.
  • Bingham Township does not have the authority to physically remove signs, however, violations of these sign standards may constitute a violation of the Zoning Ordinance, and may be prosecuted as such.
